King's Quest II ~ Romancing the Throne

From your starting point on the beach, head up one screen, then up again.  Grab the trident that's sitting on the beach and go up twice more.  Pick up the shell that's sitting on the sand.  There's nothing interesting about the shell itself, but you *will* discover there's a sapphire and diamond bracelet underneath it!  Grab it and go one screen right.  Take the stake that's leaning against the tree there then go up three screens and right one screen.

You should now be outside a little cottage.  Have a look-see in the mailbox just outside the fence.  There's a basket of goodies in there!  Think anyone'll be missing it?  Take it, close the mailbox and head one screen left.

This screen is where Little Red Riding Hood will normally appear -- it might just take a little while. If she doesn't appear, walk off the screen, then back onto it and just keep trying until she *does* appear.  When she does, talk to her to find out she's lost her basket of goodies.  Give her the basket -- she'll give you her bouquet of flowers in return and skip merrily off, leaving you a flower bouquet up and free to head right until you're outside the church.

If you're not outside the church door, go right until you are, then go inside.  Observe the monk near the altar, then go up to the altar and pray with him.  He'll stand and ask your name.  Tell him, and you'll recieve his silver cross.

Leave the church and put the cross on.  Go down one screen and look in the hole in the rocks to find a sapphire and diamond brooch to match the bracelet you found earlier.   Go up two screens and right across the bridge.  You must be careful with this bridge -- it'll only let you cross it a certain number of times.  The right number of times for what you need to do -- cross it too many times and it'll collapse.  So be careful!  Okay, once you're across the bridge, go up one screen and you'll come across the enchanted door you need to open if you're going to find Valanice.  Have a look at it and read the inscription.  Go down one screen and left back across the bridge.

Keep going left until you reach a door in a tree.  Open it and climb down the ladder.  Go right into the dwarf's little room.  If the dwarf happens to be home, quickly leave and re-enter the screen until he's not there.  Take the pot of soup from the fire and open the chest in the corner -- sapphire and diamond earrings!  Leave and continue left.

When you get back to the sea, walk down three screens and you should see a mermaid sitting on a rock.  Swim out to her and give her the bouquet you got from Little Red Riding Hood.  Ride the seahose she summons and when you reach him, give the trident you found on the beach to King Neptune.  He'll give you a bottle and reveal Key Number 1 inside the giant clam shell close by him.  Take the key and go right to head for the surface again.

Now it's time for Door Number 1.  When you're swimming in the ocean again, go up, up again, right until you reach the church door, then up again and left across the bridge.  Go up to the door and unlock it with the key.  It will disappear, revealing a new door with a second inscription.  Read it.  There's a couple of things we're going to get before going for the second key, so go down a screen and left back across the bridge, then left to the next screen.

From there, go up one screen and have a look in the hole in the tree to find a mallet.   Then go left and left again.  Have a look in the tree stump to find a sapphire and diamond necklace to add to your collection.  Go left once and down.  You should be outside Hagatha's cave.  Go inside (if Hagatha's home, simply exit and re-enter until she's not) and go over to the bird cage.  Now look in the bottle that King Neptune gave you to find a piece of cloth.  Take it out and put it over the bird cage.  This is to stop the bird making any noise.  Take the cage and exit the cave.

Now it's time for Key Number 2.  From outside Hagatha's cave, head right until you get to the screen where the bridge is.  From there, head up, up, up and up again.   Now you should be outside an antique shop.  An inspection of the sign in the window should reveal that the shop is open, so go inside.  Inside, an old lamp catches your eye.  Try to buy it and the lady will tell you that she'll sell you the lamp for two treasures (which will take points from you) or the nightingale Hagatha stole from her.  Give her the nightingale and she'll give you the lamp and close up shop.   Outside, rub the lamp three times to receieve a magic carpet, a sword and a magic bridle, in that order.

You should do the obvious thing -- ride the carpet.  When you're done flying, go right one screen to find a poisonous viper blocking your path.  Get as close to it as you can without being bitten and put the bridle on it.  It will turn into a Pegasus (a flying horse).  Talk to the horse and it'll give you a magic sugar cube that'll guard against poisonous brambles.  Go right and look in the hole in the rock for a bit of fun, then go into the cave and grab Key Number 2.  Leave the cave and ride the magic carpet back down to just outside the little antiques shop.

Alright, now ... time for Door Number 2.  From the antiques shop, go up, up and up again, then right across the bridge and up to the door.  Unlock it and read the inscription on yet another door that's STILL blocking your way.

There's just a couple more things we need before we tackle the third key, so go down, left across the bridge and down to the church door.  From there, go left and left again and you should be outside Grandma's house.  Knock on the door and go inside.   Be careful -- the wolf is sometimes in there instead of Grandma!  When it's really Grandma in there, go over to her and talk to her, then give her the chicken soup.   As your reward, she'll tell you there's something under the bed for you.  Look under the bed and take the cloak and ruby ring you find there.  Leave the house and go left, up, right, up, up and right.  Here you'll meet a dark figure waiting for you on the lake.

Before you go over to the boatman, put on the cloak and ring from under Grandma's bed.   Now try to get into the boat.  The boatman will wave you onto the boat, thinking you're someone else.  Alternatively, you can pay him with a treasure, but you lose points for that.  Once you're across the lake, get out of the boat and eat the sugar cube that the Pegasus gave you and make your way through the brambles.  As you approach the door, the ghosts guarding it will leave, also thinking you're someone else.  Go inside the castle soors and go left and up the stairs.

Once you're in the little room at the top of the stairs, go over to the chest of drawers and have a look in them -- you'll find a candle.  Take it and go back out of the room and start heading down the stairs.  About halfway down the stairs is a torch.  Light your candle with it and continue downstairs and right into the castle's main hallway.

From the main hallway, continue right into the kitchen, take the ham from the table and continue going right.

Carefully make your way down the stairs and go into the room on the left.  If the coffin is open, leave the room and re-enter until you see the coffin is closed.  Go over to it and (very quickly) open it, then stab Count Dracula with the stake and mallet.   Don't worry if you're not quick enough, though -- the cross you're wearing will make him disappear anyway.  You just don't get as many points.  Once you've disposed of Dracula, take the silver key that's mentioned and have a look in the coffin.  Take the red satin pillow that's lying up one end and you'll find Key Number 3 underneath it.   Take it and make your way out of the room, back up the stairs and into the dining room.

From the dining room, go up a screen through the curtains, then make your way up the stairs to the little room with the chest in the corner.  The silver key you have fits in that lock, so unlock the chest and take the sapphire and diamond tiara you'll find within.  Once you've nabbed that, make your way back downstairs to the dining room.

Go left and down, which will take you out of the castle.  Go back through the brambles and get back in the boat.  The ghoul will row you back across the lake.  From there, go right, right, down, down and walk across the bridge.

Back at the door, unlock it and step through into the enchanted land, where you'll eventually find lovely Valanice.

Go up a screen and take the net that's lying on the beach.  Now we're going to do a spot of fishing.  Once you catch the fish, quickly throw it back and it'll give you a ride across the sea.  Once you're on the beach, go right.

Pick up the amulet you see lying on the ground and go down a screen.  You've found Valanice's quartz tower!  Open the door and walk carefully up the stairs.  Don't go too near the lion, or you'll make a nice lunch for him.  Instead, give him the ham you found in Dracula's castle.  You could stab him with the sword the genie gave you, but you get less points ... not to mention it's much less humane!  Open the door and you'll find Valanice at last!

Aquaint yourself with the lovely Valanice -- talk to her and tell her your name.  Then give her a kiss.  Now is the time to examine that amulet you found on the beach.   You'll see the word 'Home' engraved on the back.  Type 'Home' and you'll be taken into the closing sequence, where Graham will wed Valanice and take her back to Daventry.  In the church are many characters from both KQ1 and KQ2.  The monk you met earlier will perform the ceremony.  Sit back and enjoy it!  Now King Graham doesn't have to feel lonely anymore -- he has Valanice!

Total score: (if you did everything I said) 185/185.  You've just completed King's Quest II.  Congratulations!
