The fifth in the King's Quest series, but
the fourth that I played.
Now you are to step back into the boots of King Graham. A while after Princess
Rosella's return from Tamir with the magic fruit that in fact saved your life, you set out
one fine Spring morning for a walk in the woods surrounding the castle. Birds are
singing in the trees and you feel as though nothing could possibly go wrong. Stopping
to pick some flowers along the path, you feel a chilly wind starting to blow through the
forest. The birds stop singing. Your jovial mood broken by this, you turn and
start walking back towards the castle ... and your family.
Upon climbing the gentle rise that overlooks the castle, you are suddenly seized with
terror at what you see ... or rather, what you DON'T see. Castle Daventry is gone,
and the rest of the royal family ... YOUR family ... along with it! An owl hoots in
the tree behind you, and upon your turning to face it, it starts to talk to you, telling
you it was the evil wizard Mordack who stole the castle. Not to worry, though -- this
owl's employer is also a wizard -- a very GOOD one, though a little forgetful and can help
you get your castle and your family back. Sprinkling you with fairy dust, you and the
owl fly to his homeland of Serenia, where you're met by the wizard Crispinophur, or Crispin
for short. You explain your predicament and after giving you some magical white snake
so you can understand the language of the animals and his old magic wand, tells you where
you can find Mordack's castle and assigns the reluctant owl, Cedric, to go with
you. So the two of you embark on your long journey. Good luck!
There are many, many characters for you to meet along the way ... there's Crispin and
Cedric, of course, and there's Prince Herbert and Princess Alicia, gnomes, a witch,
bandits, shop owners and villagers in the quaint little town of Serenia, Queen Icebella
and her pack of wolves, a yeti, a hungry eagle, a group of vicious harpies, a hermit and
later, the beautiful Princess Cassima and the wizard Mordack himself! Most of them
would rather hurt you than help you, but in more than one case, music soothes the savage
beast *hint*. Work that one out! ;)
There are also many exotic locations for you visit ... from the quaint little town of
Serenia to the harsh desert, the creepy, dark forest, the freezing mountains, a little
island where you might run into some trouble if you're not careful ... and finally,
Mordack's island and his castle. Once ON the island, you have to actually find a
way into the castle in order to rescue your family. Be careful as you explore ... you
never know what might be lurking in the shadows. This game, in my opinion, is another
of the best in the series -- it's the second to feature magic spells (although limited)
and is the first to feature VOICES! Yes, that's right ... Sierra have brought all
your favourite characters to life by assigning voice actors! There's some gorgeous
music to listen to as you play, too. The graphics in this chapter are better by far
than any of the previous chapters and the puzzles are a little more difficult, with more
than one place you might find a map VERY handy. Also features an elegant
'point-'n'-click' interface. You don't need to do EVERYTHING in this game, but as
always, the more puzzles you complete, the more points you'll get at the end. One of the
best of the whole series and one of my favourites! I LOVED this one!
