The sixth in the King's Quest series, but
the fifth that I played.
Remember Gwydion, the boy from King's Quest 3? Well, you're again going to take on
his role, but this time under his proper title -- Prince Alexander of Daventry. Upon
your rescue from Mordack's castle, you met the beautiful Princess Cassima from the Land of
the Green Isles. She agreed to your request that you might travel to the Land of the
Green Isles to visit her when she has returned home, but when you return to Daventry with
your family, nobody you talk to has even HEARD of the place, much less actually BEEN
there. It seems hopeless.
Undeterred, you keep trying to find the beautiful girl you simply can't get out of your
head. One day, you're in the throne room thinking about her as usual, when the Magic
Mirror clouds over and you hear Cassima's voice calling your name. Placing a hand to
the glass, you gaze with longing at the lovely image that now appears. Princess
Cassima is standing at a window in a castle, bright stars hanging in the sky. She is
calling for you ... wondering why you don't come. Suddenly, you know how to find
her -- the stars! You can navigate by the stars! Gathering a crew, you set sail
for the Land. You sail for days without seeing any land. Then one day -- you
see it! The Isles, off in the distance! Unfortunately, as you approach, a wild
storm whips the sea into a frenzy and you cannot keep control of the ship. You wake
up on a small beach -- your ship is wrecked, your papers gone and your crew lost. You
don't even know where you are! The first thing you do is seek an audience at the
castle you find nearby. Upon producing proof of your identity, you are admitted to
the castle and given an audience with the vizier. You learn that you are on the Isle
of the Crown, the main island in the Land of the Green Isles -- and this is the Castle of
the Crown, home of none other than Princess Cassima! Speaking the vizier, Alhazred,
it is clear that you are not welcome here. The kingdom is going through a very bad
time, since the islands are feuding. What's worse, the Princess doesn't want to see
you -- her parents, King Caliphim and Queen Allaria both died while she was away and she is
sequestered in mourning for them while Alhazred has taken control of the castle. You
don't quite trust this vizier, so when you're out of the castle, you make up your mind to
find out what's REALLY wrong.
There are, as usual, many characters for you to meet. The inhabitants of the Isle
of the Crown are the friendliest and you learn by asking around that nobody trusts the
vizier -- or his intentions for the Princess. There's the court clown, Jollo, with
whom it's wise to make friends, if you can win his trust. There's the shop owners,
Beauty and the Beast, the Winged Ones on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain, headed by Lord
Azure and Lady Aeriel, the mysterious Druids, the crazy inhabitants of the Isle of Wonder,
headed by the Red and White Queens and ... Death, amongst others. As usual, most
don't want to help you ... but you will make a few valuable friends, often through small
favours. Any friends you can make will greatly help you on all these rather
inhospitable islands.
Visit many locations, both of this world and the next. The Isle of the Crown, the
Isle of Wonder, the Isle of the Sacred Mountain and the Isle of the Beast are all readily
accessible once you find a map of the area. Legend also speaks of a fifth island,
shrouded in mists ... maybe you can find a way to that one too. You'll also visit
the Realm of the Dead, where you'll meet tortured souls and bargain with Death
himself. Explore catacombs, caves and castles to find out the truth about the vizier
and why nobody trusts him. This chapter would have to be my favourite out of the
entire series. The graphics are wonderful, the characters intriguing and the story
captivating. Some of the puzzles get quite challenging and provide many hours of
entertainment. This installment also offers voices and a few magic spells that can be
VERY useful. It also has the unique property of ALTERNATE ENDINGS! Yup, you
heard me -- you CAN finish the game early by doing different things, but it's a lot less
fun than doing it the long way. :) But see where you can get to -- this game is LOADS
of fun! My personal favourite.
