The seventh in the King's Quest series, but the sixth that I played.

So Prince Alexander has married Princess Cassima and accepted the offer to rule the Land of the Green Isles with her.  Now, Princess Rosella is nearly twenty years old and her mother, Queen Valanice, decides it's high time she chose a husband.  Unfortunately, Rosella has other ideas.  All her suitors bore her to tears, though they're all mad about her -- and she wants to LIVE a little before she even CONSIDERS the subjects of marrying and settling down.  She tells us this in the first King's Quest that in which a character has an opening song!

While walking in the woods near the castle one morning, Rosella and Valanice are talking about this very subject.  Rosella doesn't want anything to do with it.  Kneeling down by a pond to think things over, Rosella spies a beautiful castle and, while her mother talks, decides to jump in.  Before Valanice tells Rosella that she's invited a potential suitor over for dinner, Rosella is gone.  Picking up her daughter's gold comb, Valanice follows her into the pond.  Valanice reaches out her hand to take her daughter back to the surface, but just as their fingers touch, Rosella's wrist is grabbed by a large, hairy hand from some magical portal.  Valanice and Rosella share one last despairing look before the Princess disappears into ... where?  Valanice doesn't know where her daughter went!

As Valanice, you find yourself dumped in a desert land, wondering where in blazes you are, and where Rosella is!  After helping a weary traveller, you learn that there is a magic portal through the mountains that will let you escape, but that it was sealed years ago by an evil enchantress.  You steel yourself to finding a way through the portal, meeting a few interesting characters on the way -- there's the jackalope, who's swiped the desert rat's glasses and the traveller.  The desert isn't exactly full of life.  But you DO find a way through the portal and are one step closer to finding Rosella.  Now you find yourself in some beautiful surroundings, where you meet Lord Attus, who has been turned into a magnificent, yet sad, stag and Lady Ceres, the Lady of Spring, who has unfortunately been turned into a tree!  But there's not much time to help them yet, and you come across the little town of Falderal, run by the crazy Arch Duke Fifi le YipYap.  Everyone it seems needs SOMETHING and there are a number of puzzles you'll need to solve for them before you can go any further.  Once you DO help them, though, you can venture into the dark land of Ooga Booga, where it's rumoured Rosella has gone.  Now, you must help change the Lady of Spring back, return the Headless Horseman's head, travel to the land of Etheria and speak to the Three Fates and their nephew and thaw out Lady Maab before speaking with Lord Oberon and Lady Titania about the volcano that's about to blow up!  (More about the volcano story and the enchantress in Rosella's story.)

As Rosella, you find yourself pulled through a mirror into the Vulcanix underground, ruled by the trolls.  And what's worse -- you ARE a troll!!  Seems the magic that brought you here doesn't quite work in your favour.  But that's not the end -- you also discover that you're engaged to marry none other than the Troll King, King Otar Fenris III!!  How lucky can a girl get?!  One of the trolls, however, sees through you and realises that you're really human.  She tells you she can help you as long as you do something for her in return.  You immediately agree and after finding certain ingredients, are once again restored to your much nicer looking human form.  While collecting the ingredients, you overhear the evil enchantress Malicia's plans to blow up the entire realm of Eldritch, along with Etheria, Land in the Clouds, with a volcano!  And the Troll King is a fake!  The troll who turned you back into a human instructs you to go above ground, to the land of Ooga Booga, and find the REAL Troll King and bring him back!  You do find and rescue him, and with help from Doctor Cadaver and numerous others, together, you look for a way back down to the Vulcanix underground -- there is a secret passage, said to be hidden in the town of Falderal, before it's too late to stop the volcano!  Then you need to find out about this fake Troll King!  Who IS he?

There are many, many characters to meet and places to visit in this game, which is divided up into chapters.  From the desert to the clouds and everywhere in-between -- the wacky town of Falderal and the dark land of Ooga Booga.  You'll meet many characters, some of whom are named above, along with the other inhabitants of Falderal, the forest and Ooga Booga, including the Boogey Man himself!  This game is a little different to the others in that there are two main characters, Rosella and Valanice, who each play an alternate chapter -- Valanice does Chapter 1, Rosella Chapter 2, and so on.  While Valanice searches for Rosella, Rosella searches for Etheria.  There are a couple of ways to finish, one better than the other.  This game also features voices, wonderful music and gorgeous graphics.  One of the better (but longer) ones, but I still don't like it as much as I like KQ6.
